About This Novel
"Rust on the Class Schedule" tells the story of mother Lin Wan who arranged a full cram school for her 12-year-old son Chen Yang and fell into educational involution. Mathematical Olympiad classes, programming classes, private piano lessons and other courses filled Chen Yang's weekends. Even lunch had to be eaten on the subway while rushing to class. The child was like a programmed robot, gradually losing the liveliness and love that a child should have. Lin Wan quit her job to become a full-time stay-at-home mother. Her family was burdened with high monthly education expenses. Even though her husband's project payment was in arrears, she still insisted on letting her children take various courses. Chen Yang's interests in robots and model airplanes were ignored. His fingers were bruised from holding the mouse for a long time, and the piano he played lacked emotion, as if he was dismantling a clock. It wasn't until Chen Yang said while sleepwalking, "The robot has learned to play the piano, but it has no heart," and wrote on a scratch paper, "The robot also needs to bask in the sun," that Lin Wan finally woke up. She shredded the cram school payment slip and re-examined the meaning of education. The novel profoundly reflects the anxiety and blindness of parents under the involution of education, as well as the loss of children under heavy pressure. Finally, with the awakening of mothers, it calls for giving children the space to grow freely and returning to the true nature of education.
