After hearing the news of his lover's death, Duras put down the work at hand and started writing the story of his lover in northern China again. Compared with "The Lover", Duras uses deeper emotions and a more lingering narrative in this novel to recall her life in Vietnam as a girl. The description of her family and lover is more delicate. It is Duras's pinnacle work.
