Youthful Awakening
About This Novel
The Awakening of Youth, published in 1891, was Wedekind's first play. The play satirizes the society's secrecy about sexual matters at that time. Wedekind commented that this work is humorous. He tried to combine the tragic storyline with comedy elements to create an atypical tragic atmosphere. He said that almost all the scenes in this work are reflections of real events in his personal growth experience. The characters in the play are also created based on real prototypes. Some of them are based on the author himself, and some are based on the author's friends from his student days. The play shows the curiosity and confusion of teenagers about sex, their ignorance about sexual behavior, and also the avoidance attitude of parents towards sex education. The plots described are a portrayal of the repressive social atmosphere in Germany at that time.
