About This Novel

In the early summer of 1980, Serge Joly of Liberation asked Duras for a manuscript and asked her to create a column to talk about things that interested her. After the summer, Duras submitted the column to the publisher, and thus "Summer of 1980" was created. The ten summer reflections compiled into this column include fog, wind, sea, children, workers' strike in Gdansk, Poland, and the Moscow Olympics, with various themes.
