About This Novel
At a construction site in the Republic of China, the cowardly father Chen Afu taught his daughter Zhaodi to "have a backbone in life", but he often nodded and bowed to the foreman. The father and daughter squat in the corner of the food stall to eat every day, and only respectable people can sit at the table. The night Zhao Di disappeared, Chen Afu found his daughter's cold little body in a dark alley. He held Zhaodi in his arms and begged all over the city's medical clinics, shaking his head behind every door. The next day at the construction site, he was squatting in the corner as usual, and a co-worker asked, "Where is Zhaodi?" Chen Afu grinned, his Adam's apple rolled, and he lowered his head to eat. The foreman kicked over his broken bowl: "The dog in the way!" He cleaned it up silently, cutting his finger on the porcelain piece and mixing the blood with the soil. Under the oil lamp at night, he took out his daughter's faded red hairband and wrapped it around his bleeding finger.
