About This Novel
The background of the story is set in the Lunan Mountains on the eve of the Battle of Xuzhou in 1938. The protagonist, Shi Zhuzhu, is a 14-year-old rural boy wearing patched straw sandals. He was originally a cowherd boy from a landlord's family. Because his home was trampled by the iron hoofs of the Japanese army, he was forced to flee with He Hua, who is two years older than him. The two depended on each other in the flames of war, from the initial ignorance to the awakening after witnessing the tragic death of their loved ones. Relying on his familiarity with the terrain and the unique agility of rural children, Shizhu joined the local anti-Japanese armed forces. In desperate battles of "straw sandals against tanks", he grew from a war-fearing teenager to a "landmine and soil expert" who frightened the Japanese army. The whole drama uses the cruel war as the background, and delicately depicts a young, loyal but helpless battlefield love amidst the smoke of gunfire.
