Time Letters in Old Books
About This Novel
On a rainy day in late autumn, Lin Wan, who was looking for historical materials of the Republic of China for writing her graduation thesis, walked into the "Shiguang Bookstore" in the southwest corner of the city. Deep in the dusty bookshelf, she found a notebook with a dark blue cover. The lavender platycodon flowers embroidered on the cover were worn. Inside was a diary written by Shen Qinghe, a Shanghai woman, in the 26th year of the Republic of China. The page is crisp and yellow, but the handwriting is gentle but contains power: the concern for the third brother to go west with the army, the enthusiasm for organizing a reading club, the perseverance of "although the mountains and rivers are broken, the heart is not cold" in the artillery fire, and the secret feelings for "Mr. Gu" - the copper platycodon flower token and the gift of "use the pen as a sword and the writing as a shield" have become the most precious thoughts in troubled times. The diary ends abruptly with the words "The city breaks and goes west". In the old photos sandwiched between them, the smiles of Shen Qinghe and his best friend Azhi are frozen among the platycodon flowers. The words of the old man in the bookstore, "This is my mother's diary," suddenly intertwined the threads of time. Lin Wan was shocked to realize that the Ah Zhi in the photo was none other than her ninety-three-year-old grandmother Su Zhilan. The reunion of the two elderly people spanning half a century finally marked the end of their lost friendship and unfinished affection. A diary connects the memories of two generations. The love and perseverance in troubled times, the reunion and reconciliation in peaceful times are all hidden in the time of this old book, turning into the fragrance of platycodon flowers that never fades.
