by (hungary) Krasnohorkaj Laszlo
About This Novel
The sixty-five-year-old Baron Winkheim owed a large gambling debt in his exile in Buenos Aires. In the twilight years of his life, he decided to return to the small provincial town in Hungary where he was born, hoping to reunite with his childhood sweetheart Marika. The residents of the city heard that the baron was about to return home, thinking that he had huge wealth, and planned to donate this wealth to the small town. Endless rumors, liars and disturbances among local politicians outline a monotonous and absurd life scene in the small town. At the same time, the professor, an internationally renowned and knowledgeable scientist in the field of moss research, lived in seclusion in a shack in a deserted area on the outskirts of the city, trying to protect himself against aggression through ideological immunity training. Spectacular scenes continue to unfold, with death and the abyss looming, until finally doom befalls the unsuspecting residents of the small town...
