About This Novel

This book was originally an anti-Nazi document from within the Third Reich. It was originally published in Germany in 1947 by an unknown small publishing house in Stuttgart. Soon after, the publishing house ceased commercial operations. It went unnoticed at the time. It was not until 1964 that a newspaper published a series of articles called "Forgotten Books" that attracted people's attention. It was published as a paperback book in 1966 and also appeared in several different languages. An English version of the book was published in 1970. This book is not a diary in the traditional sense; the author does not write events in chronological order, but includes the author's thoughts, reflections, stories, and memories.
