About This Novel

In 1944, the Anti-Japanese War entered its final stage. The 359th Brigade of the 120th Division of the Eighth Route Army was ordered to organize a southward detachment, with Wang Zhen as commander and Wang Shoudao as political commissar. The southward detachment set out from the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region and headed south to Guangdong to join the Dongjiang Column in order to open up a new anti-Japanese base area. On August 12, 1945, when the southward detachment arrived at Nanwan in Hengyang, Hunan, they suddenly received an order. Since the Japanese army had surrendered, they were ordered to move north instead. During the forty-eight days from August 12 to September 28, the southbound detachment broke through the encirclement and interception of the Kuomintang troops, and finally successfully moved northward, successfully arriving in the Central Plains Liberated Area. Li Li, then deputy director of the Political Department of the Southward Detachment, recorded the marching and fighting experiences of the Southward Detachment day by day during the war. This is the main content of this book.
