About This Novel
American writer Rebecca Skruit spent ten years excavating this wonderful history spanning nearly a century, describing how the Lacks family spent a lifetime accepting the existence of HeLa cells and the scientific principles of immortality of these cells, uncovering the dark past of human experimentation, exploring medical ethics and legal issues of body tissue ownership, as well as issues of race and belief. This book delicately captures the moving stories of scientific discoveries and their profound impact on individuals. After the publication of this book, with donations from outside parties, the family finally erected a tombstone for Henrietta. On the tombstone was engraved "Eternal HeLa cells will benefit mankind forever", which is a perfect annotation of the contribution of HeLa cells to mankind. The book has been translated into more than 20 languages, and was adapted into a movie by HBO in the United States. It starred Oprah Winfrey and won many nominations such as the Emmy Award and the American Critics Choice Award.
