The book is divided into four parts. The first part is about his career and the second part is about the past in the village. It describes the author Ye Xin's unforgettable life and what he saw and heard during the ten years from March 31, 1969, when he left Shanghai to settle in Shaguozhai, Jiuchang People's Commune, Xiuwen County, Guizhou Province, to October 31, 1979, when he left the place where he settled. The third volume is about mountains and rivers in Guizhou, and the fourth volume is about mountains and villages. It narrates the author's experiences and activities while working in Guizhou after leaving the village where he settled down, and depicts a vivid picture of Guizhou's landscapes. Through eloquent narration and peaceful words, it shows the author's pursuit in a wasted time and the true feelings of a generation of intellectuals towards the mountainous countryside of Guizhou.
