About This Novel

He always has an innocent heart, uses humorous, elegant and generous language to describe the natural scenery of the motherland, depicts the gorgeous folk culture, and understands the beauty of human nature. The illustrations in this book are selected from the "Old Beijing Style" series of paintings by the famous painter Hou Changchun. In his later years, Mr. Hou recalled the life scenes in old Beijing that he experienced as a child. He used traditional Chinese painting techniques of fine brushwork and heavy color to complete the "Old Beijing Style" painting series, recreating the folk customs, characteristic vendors and mellow folk customs of old Beijing. The civilian life in old Beijing from the early 1930s to the late 1940s reflected in the painting is exactly the same as the "Beiping" described by Mr. Lao She. Looking at Mr. Hou's paintings, one will naturally think of Mr. Lao She's writings.
