This book is the last work completed by Remarque, the author of "All Quiet on the Western Front". It was published in 1971 and tells the story of the fear and sorrow of the forced displaced people in the shadow of war. People on the run must rely on chance events to survive. The less credible the chance events are, the more normal they feel. Ross gave me his passport on the day he died, and I temporarily had a new name and a future as one of the "luckiest" handful of unfortunate escapees. But the memory of the past always follows me closely like a ghost, waiting for the opportunity to kill me. I knew I needed to pay the price for this brutal, falcon-like, breathless freedom.
