About This Novel

The second Saturday in October 1969 was the "Black Weekend" of the US Air Force's invasion of Vietnam: only 9 of the 28 bombers that took off from the base returned, and the rest were shot down by the Viet Cong. Late that night, the Viet Cong sarcastically said on the TV station: "Another 13 American flying heroes have joined the ranks of prisoners of war. So far, the number of American pilots captured by our military and civilians has reached 256." The U. S. Department of Defense was furious and asked General Allen, the commander of the special forces - the "Green Berets": "You are equipped with the best equipment in the world and enjoy the best treatment, but you allowed American fighter planes to penetrate North Vietnam's air defense network. What do you do for food?"
