About This Novel
In 1943, the Anti-Japanese War entered its sixth year. In the winter of this year, the Japanese army concentrated more than 200,000 troops to encircle Changde, an important town in northern Hunan. Changde is known as a granary, cotton field, tea town, and fish pond. It "encloses the dangers of Dongting on the left and controls the key points of the Five Streams on the right." It flows from the Yuanjiang River to the Dongting. It can reach the Yangtze River by water, and can reach Wuhan, Nanjing, Shanghai and the East China Sea down the river. To the west, it is an important land passage into Sichuan and Guizhou. Its geographical location is very important and has been a battleground for military strategists since ancient times. During the Anti-Japanese War, Nanjing and Wuhan fell one after another, and the Nationalist Government moved to Chongqing as its capital. Changde is not only the gateway and political, economic and cultural center of northwestern Hunan, but also a transportation hub and material distribution center. More importantly, it is an important barrier to protect the accompanying capital Chongqing.
