About This Novel

The novel continues the detective world built by Louise Penny. Penny tells us another funny and thought-provoking story about human nature, about the blurred lines of right and wrong, good and bad. Armand Gamache arrives at an abandoned farmhouse after receiving a letter of invitation and discovers that a near-stranger has listed him as one of the executors. Out of curiosity, Gamache accepted, and soon learned that the other two executors were Milner Landers, the seller of Three Pines Bookstore, and a young builder. None of them had seen the old woman. The will was so eccentric and contained an extremely unlikely bequest that everyone thought the woman was delusional. But, Gamache asked himself, what if she was close to being sober? When a body is discovered in Three Pines, the word "bizarre" suddenly becomes less strange and more threatening. But this is not an exclusive threat to Gamache. The investigation into the events that led to his suspension six months ago dragged on into the depths of winter. Enough narcotics to kill thousands of people have disappeared from downtown Montreal. With a deadly drug on the horizon, Gamache races to find answers. As he uses increasingly daring and even desperate methods to recover the drugs, Armand Gamache begins to see his own blind spots, where something terrible lurks.
