About This Novel
Kangnian Village is an inconspicuous small village on the Great Plains, in a remote area with no resources. It is neither close to the sea nor coal mines. If you dig a few feet upward, you will find nothing in the sky. If you dig a few feet underground, you will find nothing but mud and not even a single stone. To build a house, the villagers have to go to the mountainous area three to four hundred miles away to get a few square stones as foundation stones. There are no mountains or water on the plain. The scenery is not beautiful, and there are no historical sites. If there is scenery, there are only a few sparse willow trees scattered in and outside the village. They look a bit dark green in spring and summer. Occasionally, a few birds fly over, rest on them, chirp for a while, as if they are discussing the barrenness of this place, and then fly away like arrows. The so-called plain is just a piece of white-flowered saline-alkali soil. Such soil cannot even grow crops, so the village has been poor for many years.
