About This Novel
In Europe and the United States, there have always been legends about ghosts, but "Ghost Story" as a literary genre did not officially appear until the beginning of the 19th century. The reason may be related to the inherent secularity of the "novel" genre. This book contains a total of thirteen classic European and American supernatural novels, among which: "The Beggar Woman of Lucano" (1810) is one of the two earliest supernatural novels in Europe, "The Story of Willy the Tramp" (1824) is the earliest supernatural novel in Britain, and "The Queen of Spades" (1834) is the oldest in Russia. One of the earliest supernatural novels, "The Fall of Usher House" (1839) is one of Poe's two most famous supernatural novels. "The Turn of the Screw" (1898) is Henry James's most important novella and a landmark work in the history of supernatural novels. The short supernatural novel "Ghost Island" of the same name was written by the British novelist Algernon Blackwood and published in 1899.
