About This Novel
Bologna, a June evening in 1858. A quick knock on the door. This is the home of the Jewish businessman Momolo Mortara, and the police of the Papal State were ordered to take away Mortara's six-year-old son Edgardo. According to the tip, Edgardo had been baptized and was no longer allowed to stay in a Jewish home. In full view of everyone, the police really took Edgardo away. Edgardo's fate suddenly became the focus of attention of the Italian Jewish community, and received support from the Jewish communities in France, the United Kingdom and other places.
