The protagonist in "The Girl Detective" is generally considered to be the first female professional detective in the history of detective fiction. She is a mysterious figure, we know very little about her, and her name is not even mentioned in the book. She sometimes calls herself "Mrs. Gladden," although she admits that this is just "the name most commonly used in the office." Even the police don't seem to know her real name and refer to her simply as "G."
