On the night of May 16, 1956, Zhang Rengui, the director of the Xiuqiao Town Police Station, was taken to the corpse pile at the east end of Xiuqiao Town and beaten. The beating was so severe that the skin and flesh were torn and blood flowed. The one who beat him did it with a whip. Beatings of people have occurred intermittently in Xiuqiao Town over the past few decades. They include slaps, fists, kicks, head tops, and mouth bites. I have never seen or heard of whips. Beating people with a whip should be a thing of the old society, and what happened in the movie should have little connection with the social life of Xiuqiao Town around 1956. Zhang Rengui was lying on his bed in the town hospital, thinking about how he had been whipped. He could only lean on the hospital bed with the right half of his body. Because only his face, the soles of his feet, the palms of his hands, and the right half of his body were not injured. He couldn't figure out why the person who whipped him whipped him like that.
