One night in late spring and early summer, Gaozhou City, located in northern Guangxi and southern Hunan, experienced thunder and lightning, wind and rain. The rain that had been falling for two days and two nights not only did not stop, but became heavier and heavier. As the night deepened, the rain became more intense, the wind and rain hit the branches, and the thunder and lightning broke the clouds. The entire Gaozhou City seemed to be shrouded in the fear of the end of the world. Lin Nansheng was sitting in the brightly lit Red House Shoe Store, slowly sipping Kung Fu tea and looking out the foggy window in a daze. The occasional cars passing by on the street and the pedestrians hurriedly running past the window did not disturb his contemplation, as if everything was in another world and had nothing to do with him. After a while, Lin Nansheng turned to look at the female clerk Li Xiaofei, who was dozing on the counter, lit a cigarette, and continued his daze through the faint green smoke.
