They have loved, suffered, and lived as footnotes in history.
The book describes their "unable to love" and their struggle in the torn apart between feudal ethics and personal consciousness. Lu Xun's first wife, Zhu An, was never accepted by her husband throughout her life; Chen Yuanyuan was falsely accused by history books of being a troublemaker, but in the end she was just a beauty but suffered a fate. Their tragedy is not only because of love, but also because they were born in the wrong era. The author uses a first-person narration to re-illuminate the hidden destiny of women. Underneath the seemingly restrained words, there is an inquiry into emotions and human nature: behind the halo of great men, are those silent women another kind of "history"?
