About This Novel

"The Phantom of the Opera" is a suspenseful love novel. The protagonist of the story, Eric, is a knowledgeable and spiritual composer who is gifted with a good singing voice and is also an excellent architect. However, he can only live like a ghost in the dark basement of the Paris Opera House wearing a mask. He never shows his true face to others because underneath the mask is an ugly face. His unfortunate life experience created a twisted personality that made him constantly enemies with others, and even caused a series of terrorist incidents in the opera house. Later, he fell in love with the beautiful actress Christina and began to teach her to sing, making her a new favorite in the theater world. Until the heroine's childhood sweetheart Raoul appears, Eric's paranoid and morbid character completely breaks out. As a result, an appalling, creepy, tragic and terrifying love story was staged underground at the Paris Opera House.

An absolute classic. The stage version is particularly touching and highly recommended.

The theme of this book is quite similar to The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Beauty and the Beast. The protagonists are all ignored by the world because of their ugly appearance, and their beautiful insides are therefore isolated and rejected. However, they are still struggling in this prejudiced society, striving to win the recognition of others. Personally, I prefer the stage version because its plot line is relatively simple and clear and the music production is superb. In comparison, the character relationships in the original work are more complicated, and there are many more characters than in the stage play. In addition to these, there is also a movie of the same name, comics and stand-alone games. But I personally think that the singing and acting skills of the characters in the movie still pale in comparison to the 25th anniversary version of the stage play.

The plots of the original book and the stage play are slightly different, but generally speaking, both of them tell the love story (well, actually it is unrequited love) between the Phantom, who is despised by the world because of his ugly appearance, and a female singer named Christine. Phantom was discriminated against because of his deformity when he was a child. Even though he showed extraordinary talents in various aspects, the world still abandoned him because of his flaws... Until he met Christine, a girl who innocently recognized him as a musical angel. The Phantom, who has been living underground in the theater, is isolated from the world. When he comes into contact with Christine, he slowly falls in love with the only person willing to accept him. Unfortunately, Christine already has a crush on someone, and the Viscount she loves also has the same feelings for her. Since the Phantom has never tasted the taste of love and being loved, he had no choice but to force Christine to stay with him in the way he thought was right. This also led to the heroine's affection for the Phantom decreasing day by day, and eventually led to the confrontation between the three in the final scene.
