"Zhou Zuoren's Collected Works: History of Modern European Literature" is a companion volume to "History of European Literature". It is a compilation of the "History of European Literature in the Nineteenth Century" lecture notes that Zhou Zuoren taught for the second-year students of Chinese Literature at Peking University after "History of European Literature". The content ranges from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, with a special focus on European legendary and realist literature of the 19th century that had a profound influence on the scholars of the May 4th generation. The lecture notes were not published at the time. A copy of the lecture notes was first discovered in the National Library by scholar Zhi'an in 2005. It was compiled and published in a single volume in 2007, and this time it is included in a self-edited collection for the first time. Zhou's work on literary history has extensive knowledge, profound insights, elegant writing, and easy-to-understand explanations. It is known as the work that started "Chinese Enlightenment Literature."
