About This Novel

Li Er's Works Series includes novels, novellas, short stories and essays by Li Er, winner of the Mao Dun Literature Award. They include "The Dull Voice", "The Poetics of the Afternoon", "Questions and Answers", "Cherrys on the Pomegranate Tree", "The Tutor is Dead", "The Love of Sons and Daughters", "The Devil Enters the Village" and "Coloratura". Li Er, male, was born in Jiyuan, Henan in 1966. He graduated from the Chinese Department of East China Normal University in 1987. He taught in colleges and universities for many years, and later became a professional writer at the Henan Academy of Literature. He also served as deputy editor-in-chief of "Wild Plains" magazine. He currently works at the Museum of Modern Chinese Literature. One of the most important writers in the contemporary Chinese literary world, he always adheres to an intellectual writing stance and describes the great changes in China in an encyclopedic manner. His works include short and medium-length novels such as "The Tutor is Dead", "Scene", "Poetics of the Afternoon" and "Forgetting", and novels such as "Coloratura" and "Cherrys on the Pomegranate Tree". "Coloratura" was shortlisted for the 6th "Mao Dun Literary Award" in 2002, and in 2010 was named one of the top ten Chinese novels in the past thirty years (1979-2009). He has won the third and fourth "Everyone Literature Award" (honorary award) and the first "21st Century Dingjun Biennial Literature Award". The novel "Brother Yingwu" won the 10th Mao Dun Literature Award. The works have been translated into German, Italian, French, English, Korean, Japanese, Spanish and other languages.
