Chekhov is a world-class Russian short story master and the last critical realist art master in Russia in the late 19th century. Together with the French writer Maupassant and the American writer O. Henry, he is known as one of the "three major short story writers in the world". This collection contains 14 short stories. "The Bet" depicts the story of a banker's bet with a lawyer. The lawyer read a lot of books during his fifteen years of imprisonment and gained a spiritual rebirth. However, the banker tried to break the contract and murder the lawyer, exposing his ugly soul.
