The 57th Division of the 74th Army, codenamed "Hu Ben", was surrounded by more than 60,000 Japanese troops and fought hard for more than ten days, fighting bloody battles with the Japanese invaders before they defended Changde. There were more than 8,000 people in the army, but only 83 survived in the end. The tone of the book is tragic, generous and majestic.
