The Alluring Sanshui Village
by Lai Changhua
About This Novel
This book is a collection of Lai Changhua's essays in recent years, which is divided into four units when compiled into this book. The first unit, "Hometown Love Stories", is set in Sanshui Village, a Hakka village in southern Jiangxi. The story spans eighty years from the 1940s to the present, and each article is a growth ring of this Hakka-style tree. These rings of growth are filled with the sorrow and happiness of the people at the bottom, and their endurance and resistance are full of powerful vitality. The second unit, "Social Chatting", involves people's folk customs, things seen and heard, and family ethics. Between the lines, they sometimes criticize evil practices or make fun of themselves. Sometimes they see the scenery of the earth and sometimes hear the monologues. The third unit, "Education Fragments", is the author's experience in teaching for decades. Although the author is in a grassroots school in a rural area, he is by no means satisfied with being a teacher who makes a living by writing chalk. His speculations on the current situation and direction of education in our country are of considerable breadth and depth, especially his vigorous exploration of quality education. The fourth unit, "Speaking and Interpreting Chinese Characters," collects articles divided into literary criticism and language examination. In the former, the author captures a unique perspective and analyzes ancient and modern famous works from the outside to the inside, and explores the ideological significance of famous works by looking at the big and small. In the latter, he mainly conducts a tentative study on the relationship between Hakka dialect and Mandarin, from which we can see his personal opinions on learning Mandarin and writing with the help of dialect.
