About This Novel
Don't think that "Hamburg old ladies" refers to all the old ladies in Hamburg, and don't think that it is just any one among the old ladies in Hamburg. It is an "honorific title" given to a specific old lady in Hamburg by my husband and me - Frau Greinert. Madame Golenat was our landlady in Hamburg more than ten years ago. In person, we call her Mrs. Golenat, of course in German. When we mention her in private, we change her name to "Old Lady", which is smooth Chinese. For example, one day I told my husband that the old lady invited us to dinner on the weekend; another day my husband told me that the old lady's car hit the iron gate downstairs in the afternoon and the iron bars were bent. In fact, we called her that when she was there, and she didn't understand Chinese anyway.
