About This Novel

The story told in "Vampire" begins in the early 19th century, when a strange British aristocrat named Ruthven was active in London's upper class. The young Aubrey developed a strong curiosity about Ruthven and traveled with him. The two broke up in Rome because of different interests. Aubrey went to Athens alone, where he met a beautiful woman. However, the latter died of a vampire attack on a stormy night, and Aubrey became ill as a result. Lord Ruthven then came to Athens to take care of Aubrey, and after he recovered, the two traveled together again. The two encountered robbers on the way, and Ruth was seriously injured. Before she died, Aubrey made Aubrey swear to conceal his death. Then Aubrey returned to London and learned that his sister was engaged, and her fiancé was the dead Lord Ruthven! The word vampire first appeared in 1732. The "London Daily News" in March of that year published a strange thing that happened in Hungary: a mercenary named Arnold Paul turned into a vampire after his death and killed people. When people dug his body out of the grave, they found that the body was still fresh and showed no signs of decay, but pure and bright red blood flowed from his seven orifices, just like the legendary vampire. In 1745, three British gentlemen published a European travelogue in a newspaper, introducing German folk vampire rumors to British readers. The travelogue wrote: "These vampires are believed to be the corpses of dead people... Walking out of the grave at night, sucking the blood of many living people, and even killing them." However, the story of vampires was gradually forgotten, and it did not make a comeback until the early 19th century.
