Criminal Defender (translated Documentary)
by (japan) Kameishi Riko, Nitta Kuango
About This Novel
Riko Kameishi, a young female lawyer, took over a theft case in Osaka. She originally thought it was a formality job, but she learned from the client that in order to control criminal intelligence, the police installed GPS on the suspect's vehicle and conducted mobile phone surveillance without applying for a search warrant. Sensing the danger of infringing on citizens' personal privacy, Kameishi formed a young defense team to appeal the police's overreach of power, all the way to the Supreme Court. In the end, Japan's Supreme Court ruled in 2017 that "it is illegal for the police to use GPS to monitor citizens without a search warrant." This case also became a landmark case in the Heisei era.
