The novel is set in ancient Russia in the 15th century and revolves around the life of a medieval doctor named Arseny. The protagonist's lover Ustjina died in childbirth while the two were unmarried, and Arseni was tortured by his conscience. In order to find salvation, he decided to embark on a journey of seeking truth alone, trying to find the answer that would bring him peace of mind.
