About This Novel
Xie Wen, director of the 21st Century Workshop, was reborn in northern Shanxi in 1986 - several acres of thin land at home were expropriated by coal mines, and only then did he get what others saw as an "iron rice bowl": a mine security guard. He seemed to be taken care of and well paid, but within a few days of taking up the job, he ran into big trouble: three tons of clean coal were stolen at night, and the blame was placed directly on his head. When the suspension notice was slapped on the table, he didn't even have room for excuses. Others laughed at him for "making a living by occupying land", but he sneered: he followed the clues and found out the real culprit of stealing coal, and even the mine manager looked at him differently; from being a marginalized security guard to contracting mine logistics, he led the villagers to collect mountain products for export; with the east wind of reform and opening up, he turned cinders into real gold and silver. When the barren mountain village turned into a prosperous place where trucks shuttled, Xie Wen, holding a cigarette in his mouth, had no emotions in his heart: In this life, if he were not to be a powerful coal boss, would he be too sorry for the luck of rebirth?
