Hunter's Diary
by Turgenev
About This Novel
"Diary of a Hunter" is Turgenev's famous work, and it was also the work that put him in prison. The book tells twenty-four stories using a hunter's hunting as a clue. These stories seem independent and unrelated, but they all have a strong local Russian flavor, and they directly touch on the poor life of the people at the bottom of Russia, fully exposing the cruelty of serfdom. Turgenev used a unique writing technique to depict Russia's honest folk customs and changing natural scenes vividly, like a rich and colorful oil painting: the grass shines like the light of green jade; "Diary of a Hunter" is the first work in the history of Russian literature to expose serfdom in such a detailed and naked way, which is why it is a world-famous work.
