About This Novel
This book is the twenty-seventh volume of the Harvard Classics Series, which includes many famous essays by modern British writers, covering literature, history, philosophy and many other fields. For example, Philip Sidney, one of the earliest poets in the history of English literature, wrote about poetry, Ben Jonson, a contemporary of Shakespeare, wrote "On Shakespeare" and "On Bacon", historian Thomas Babington Macaulay's "Machiavelli" and so on. It is no exaggeration to say that the four hundred years of development of British prose are contained in the twenty-four works of these seventeen writers.
