"Inherited Power: The Story of an Exorcist" is based on a sensational illegal exorcism case at the Turin Episcopal Court in 1697: the parish priest of Santena, Giowa Battista Chiesa, who performed exorcisms and cured diseases for the people, triggering a fanatical following, but did not obtain permission from the Holy See. Microhistorian Giovanni Levi used the exorcism notes left by Father Giowa Battista Chiesa and various documentary materials from Santena, a small village in the Principality of Savoy, Italy, to reconstruct the power struggle from the central to the local areas at that time, focusing on Santena. The social details of early modern Europe are revealed in detail, and he explores the origin of European modernity.
