This work provides a comprehensive study of land reclamation, agricultural technology, and the conditions of rural settlements, and reinterprets the functions and nature of the legal system in a revised demographic and economic context. Farris's text is accompanied by several maps, population pyramids of five regions, and original maps and text translations of some tax and household registers. These documents further illuminate Japan's demographic and economic conditions during the three hundred years of the seventh, eighth, and ninth centuries.
