This book, originally titled "Modern History of China", is Jiang Tingfu's classic work on the study of modern Chinese history. It was also a textbook for university history departments and has a wide influence. With a calm and objective attitude, Jiang Tingfu narrated the history of China from the Opium War to the Revolution of 1911. He expressed concerns about the future of China and the fate of the nation in an academic way, and put forward many insights. American sinologist John Fairbank called Jiang Tingfu "the leader in the study of modern Chinese history." This book is a tripartite stand with Guo Tingyi's "Outline of Modern Chinese History" and Xu Zhongyue's "Modern Chinese History".
