Violence: Thinking Without Limits
About This Novel
Bernstein is a famous contemporary Western thinker. His recent book "Violence: Thinking Without Limits" focuses on the problem of violence that seriously plagues modern society. In this book, Bernstein gave full play to his ability to integrate various schools of thought, and derived his own unique insights based on fully absorbing the thinking of previous generations. At the same time, he did not overly pile up "violent" examples, but focused on exploring the ideological roots behind violent chaos. Our era may be called the "age of violence" because books, newspapers, film and television works, and the Internet are full of various realistic or fictitious representations of violence. But what exactly do we mean by "violence"? What can it bring to people? Where are its boundaries? Bernstein attempts to answer these questions in this book. By examining the works of five scholars - Schmitt, Benjamin, Arendt, Fanon, and Assmann - who discuss the issue of violence, he deeply analyzes and reflects on their arguments for the importance of non-violence and their defense of violence in special circumstances. Bernstein pointed out that there is no universal standard for judging the legitimacy of violence. A feasible solution to this problem is to create a public environment that allows free and open discussion and allows individual opinions to be expressed and heard.
