Archaeological Research on the Megalithic Cultural Landscape of Senegambia
About This Novel
The work takes Senegal, a West African country, as a case study, combining archaeological practice and ethnic history research to explore the issue of African cultural landscape. The author believes that cultural landscape is the result of cultural production, and settlement communities transform physical spaces into meaningful places through daily activities, beliefs and values. This book is divided into three parts. The first part explains the archaeological situation and data of the megalithic circle cemeteries in Senegambia. The second part introduces the cultural landscapes on the western and eastern edges of the megalithic circle: the Saloum Delta shell mounds, the Basari and Bedic cultural landscapes. The three landscape cases span the period from the mid-2nd millennium BC to the present. The analysis of the megalithic circle cemeteries is entirely within the scope of archeology; the analysis of the Salum Delta also has strong archaeological significance, but it also includes a discussion of national history; and the case studies of the Bassari and Bedic areas reflect the role of the local tribal people in the formation of cultural landscapes through the process of heroic resistance to foreign invasion.
