About This Novel

Chang'an is one of the 32 towns under the jurisdiction of Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, China. Chang'an, a thousand-year-old ancient town, a vibrant city and a famous cultural town. Before the reform and opening up, it was poor and backward. Now the annual GDP exceeds 10 billion, and today it exceeds 40 billion. The total industrial output value reaches more than 130 billion. It ranks third in the "National Top 1000 Small Towns Comprehensive Development Level", a national civilized village, a national ecological township, and a red flag grassroots party organization in Guangdong Province. It has won more than 60 national honors and more than 60 provincial honors. "The Road to Chang'an: The Oral History of a Southern Town" is based on the development process of Chang'an Town since the reform and opening up. By interviewing nearly a hundred people in different fields in Chang'an Town, it reflects the political, economic, social, cultural and other changes in Chang'an Town since the reform and opening up, and then traces the historical changes in rural life in towns and villages since the founding of New China. The book took three years to complete, with more than 200 hours of interview recordings. It contains oral narratives from 52 interviewees and nearly a hundred old photos. There are many grand narratives about reform and opening up and its gains and losses, but more of it is a detailed picture of the lives of ordinary Chang'an people. Among the interviewees, there are both current and former leading cadres and the general public; there are both local entrepreneurs and foreign business representatives; there are both old and young people; there are both local cadres and the masses, as well as migrant workers. It is these Chang'an people who use their courage, wisdom, mind and talent to write the history of themselves and the town, and write the miracles on the journey to realize the Chinese Dream.
