On National Defense
by Jiang Baili
About This Novel
After the September 18th Incident in 1931, the famous general Jiang Baili devoted himself to the research of national defense theory in order to fight against the invasion of Japanese militarism. He published a series of articles and gave lectures at Hangzhou Central Aviation School and Lushan Officer Training Corps. In the summer of 1937, he reorganized some of the relevant articles, speeches, and earlier works into a book, named "On National Defense". It was first printed by the Lushan Officer Training Corps and then published by Shanghai Dagong Newspaper. The main arguments of "On National Defense" are: first, to exchange space for time; second, to resist the war in an all-out way without fear of being swallowed by whales; third, to use geographical conditions to weaken the Japanese offensive and form a confrontation, forming a long-term battlefield. Discuss the theories on how to build and improve China's national defense system. To build national defense, two issues must be resolved in advance: how to make defense equipment expenses beneficial to the development of national production; how to closely communicate academic theories and facts. Three organizational outlines for establishing a civilian army were also drawn up.
