After the Opium War, foreign capitalist countries stepped up their aggression against China. In order to pay compensation, the Qing government stepped up its efforts to plunder the people. In the ten years after the war, the people's burden more than doubled compared to before the war, and thousands of working people were forced to go bankrupt and sell their children and daughters. In order to survive, the people took up arms one after another to resist the exploitation and oppression of the ruling class. In 1851, large and small uprisings throughout the southern provinces finally merged into a powerful revolutionary torrent - the Taiping Rebellion. The main figure who led this great uprising was the outstanding peasant leader Hong Xiuquan.
