General History of France

This book is better than "France". The writing is timeless and the emotions are sincere. I prefer ancient French history. I watched Caesar's conquest of Gaul, Prime Minister Pepin's usurpation of the throne, Charlemagne's glorious history, Joan of Arc's miracle, Louis XIV's chaos, Napoleon I's domination of Europe, Napoleon III's capture, the bloody First World War, etc. I watched them all with great interest. After the appeasement of World War II, the rise and retreat of de Gaulle, the loss of all colonies, thirty years of glory and forty years of decline, it didn't feel so good. Still too close. The pictures are beautiful. The author's attitude is also very humble and does not have the airs of a historian.
