About This Novel

"If you are going to suffer, you should suffer in the interest of the country." – Jawaharlal Nehru, in 1948, addressing villagers uprooted by the construction of the Hirakud Dam. I stood on the hill and laughed loudly. I took a boat across the Narmada from Jalsindhi and landed on a narrow strip of land on the other side. From there, between several low, barren hilltops, I could see the seat of the tribes Sikka, Surung, Neemgavan and Domkhedi. I can see their light, airy and delicate home. I could see the fields and forest behind the house. I could see the kids trotting along with their little goats, like peanuts with a motor on them.
