About This Novel

"The Missing Child" is the fourth book in the "Neapolitan Quartet". The novel focuses on the prime and later years of Lila and Elena ("I"), bringing a heartbreaking end to their friendship that has lasted for more than fifty years. For the sake of love and writing, "I" left my husband and returned to Naples with my two daughters. I inevitably became close to Lila again and the city I had wanted to escape from. "I" and Lila even got pregnant and gave birth to a child in the same year, and experienced the horrific and brutal Naples earthquake. Everything fell apart and everything was about to be rebuilt.

Finale

After reading the last page, I felt that I had walked a long way with the narrator of the story, walking through their lives together. At the end of the story, Lila also disappears. She really disappears. When a person disappears, the traces of her past existence are also cleared away. After she disappeared, Elena finally took a serious look at the friendship in this life. She still really loved the closest person in her life who she also hated.

After getting old

In a hurry, the story seems to have become dull and gloomy since the disappearance of Lina's child. There is no sense of hope. People die one after another. The work cannot keep up with the times. After being anxious, I slowly accept my own aging. Constantly recalling the past, seeing the imprint of the previous generation on oneself, and seeing one's imprint on the next generation, gives one a sense of reality of entering old age. Someone around me recently told me that I feel that life is actually very short. After you reach the age of 50, you may not be able to do what you want to do. Think about it, that failed trip to the beach and the doll thrown into the cellar actually had some kind of hint. Elena finally left Naples and came back because of Lina; Lina wanted to go out but never stepped out. The children were not around, so Lina finally sent back the two dolls, perhaps hoping that everything would go back to before throwing away the dolls. It would be nice to start over again.
