About This Novel
From May 1970 to October 1975, I spent five and a half years working in the queue in southeastern Shanxi. Those five and a half years allowed me to get to know Chinese society and the lower level of life, which laid the foundation for my future life and left me with the most unforgettable memories in my life. I always believe that without that period of life experience and tempering, there would be no me and my life later. What is described here is the reality of the countryside where I live. It can be said to be a microcosm of China's rural areas in the 1970s. If it is used as a sample, it may help people today understand that era. For understandable reasons, I have concealed the names of certain places and people, and at the same time, I have written as little as possible about the life of educated youths that has little to do with rural reality. However, the people and events described here are real, and many of them are based on the diaries or letters I left back then.
