About This Novel
On the eve of the Wuchang Uprising of the Revolution of 1911, the novel's protagonist Tan Qingxiu's parents were persecuted by clan dignitaries, her family fell into decline, her father was forced to death, and her dependent stepmother Chen Yuting was forced to make a living and sold her to the Cai family as a daughter-in-law. In the Cai family, she was bullied and tortured, and fell into despair and pain several times. With her stubbornness and agility tempered by hardships, she gradually won the recognition of the Cai family. She took charge of the family at the age of fifteen and helped the Cai family prosper. During this period, she accepted new ideas, adapted to the revolutionary trend, and assisted her stepmother Chen Yuting and sister-in-law Cai Biyun to join the Revolution of 1911. After Chen Yuting's death, he took on the dual responsibilities of mother and sister, raised his younger brother Tan Qingzhi, educated him, and became a famous local veterinarian. The theme of the novel is to eulogize how my grandma and other feudal rural women of a generation struggled to survive, understand, and have a future under the oppression of their humble status and layers of divine power, clan power, and husband power; and how they taught their husbands and children, were kind to others, broke through ignorance, naturally and consciously reproduced and raised children, revived families, strengthened ethnic groups, and even strengthened China.
